The conference on environmental protection technological achievements appraisal, centering on new technology of recycling steel dust and nonferrous metal smelting slag, took place in Beijing. It was hosted by the China Association of Environmental Protection Industry on April 24th. Many experts from environment science and metal smelting areas formed an appraisal committee and reached a consensus that GreenNovo’s new technology, achievements and facilities already met the international high standards!

The appraisal committee was star-studded including research fellow Wang Qi from the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, research fellow Hu Hualong from Solid Waste and Chemicals Management Technology Center of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, professor Li Jinhui from Tsinghua University, research fellow Zhang Hui from the Institute of Processing Engineering of Chinese academy of sciences, professor Cang Daqiang from the University of Science and Technology Beijing, professor Chen Dexi from the China ENFI Engineering Corporation, and research fellow Zhou Lianbi from the BGRIMM Technology Group.

The professionals all agreed that GreenNovo’s technological achievements are consistent with the environmental protection and circular economy policy, and can be applied to recycle high chlorine and heavy-metal containing solid wastes, and effectively reclaim zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, tin, indium, iron, iodine and other valuable element from solid waste. As a role model case of circular economy at home and abroad, GreenNovo’s new technology plays an important part in recycling hazardous waste, developing circular economy technology, boosting energy savings, and environmental protection industry and building a sustainable development mode. They suggested we should explore the oversea market as soon as possible, especially in the country along the Belt and Road Initiative.

The situation of solid hazardous wastes treatment is severe, recycling and resource utilization are imminent

As the top producing country in steel, zinc, lead, copper and non-ferrous metal smelting, China produces over 50 million tons of heavy-metal steel dust and smelting slag each year with a historical stockpile of 700 million tons based on the stats from the Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute. The composition of metallurgical solid waste is complicated, containing a mass of heavy metals and valuable elements like zinc, indium, lead, cadmium, bismuth, tin and iodine. Hard to process, they cause serious damage to soil, water and to the ecological environment, and is a huge waste of resources.

Recycling heavy metal solid waste is the only way to eliminate the pollution. As a technical forerunner and leading corporation in the field, GreenNovo leverages high technology to recycle the waste from the metallurgical and chemical engineering industry with pollution-free treatment. We have blazed the trail by eliminating the heavy metal pollution from the sources.

New technology fills the gap, effectively achieves harmless treatment and recycling

To better recycle the solid and hazardous waste, GreenNovo develops new technology to reclaim the steel dust and non-ferrous metal smelting slag through years of tests, practices and research on tackling the problems occurred in production based on the original comprehensive technology on reclaiming non-ferrous metals from blast furnace dust.

Utilizing steel dust and non-ferrous smelting slag as raw materials, GreenNovo adopts an oxygen enrichment technology to improve the waelz kiln’s operation, and optimize efficiency and lower air pollutant emission. By utilizing the energy saving oxygen enrichment technology, and the zinc sulfate purification technologies, such as dechlorinating via monovalent copper ion, removing iron via oxygen, removing cobalt and nickel at mid and low temperature, these processes can improve the recovery of valuable metals. Joint iron separation technology can separate iron from impurities in the slag efficiently. Blowing out and oxidant methods of recovering iodine from the steel dust for the first time, begins filling the gap in the iron recovery technology in China.

The technology also guarantees no water discharged outside of the plant, substantially reducing heavy metal, air pollutants and carbon emission, saves standard coal, all of which will help companies to prevent pollution and reap environmental protection benefits. The recovered element can be applied to produce zinc plating, coarse indium, lead slime, coarse cadmium, bismuth residue, tin residue, coarse iodine, purified iron powder, and ultra thin purified iron powder, K, and Na salts. The valuable element is separated, extracted and turned into resources from solid and hazardous waste, even the tailings are sold as building materials. The steel dust and heavy metal metallurgical waste is thus recycled without causing more pollution. The technology was put into production in 2013 and went smoothly with a stable output ever since. With this, the pyrometallurgical enrichment technology has been successfully expanded to other branches and hydrometallurgical technology has been applied in Gejiu, Xingan and Tangshan factories.

Chairman Ma Liyang added, “it is a great honor that our technology can receive this recognition from the experts”. Founded in 2000, GreenNovo has always been committed to recycling heavy metal solid and hazardous wastes and has been developed into the largest scale, most highly advanced tech environmental protection enterprise, with the fullest industry chain operation. In the future, we will keep working on upgrading our technology and make our contribution to the environmental protection goal.
